John Coplans
I have chosen to research John Coplans because his work relates to my theme for this assignment, I am planning on taking portrait images but not of peoples faces, instead I am going to be photographing parts of the body which they believe best represent them.
I like this image because it has a very personal feel to it which is what I am hoping to achieve, I like how this image and all of his work is in black and white, I believe if it was in colour it wouldn't feel as 'warm' and personal. This image is strong because you can see all the details in his hands because it is such a close up image, I think if it had been taken from further away it wouldn't feel as personal as it wouldn't have all the details in his fingers.
The images Coplans takes are self portraits which I like as it reveals things about his personality that could not be communicated through self portraits of his full face and body.
I like this image because it also has a very personal touch. I like this image because it is a close up so again you can see all the details.I think this photo may have looked good in colour but I think it definitely looks better in black and white. I like how in this image one eye is in the sunlight and the other is in the shade, this puts the focus in the middle where the line between light/dark.
This image incorporates narrow depth of field, the focus is on the lips and the rest of the face is out of focus. This is effective because it focuses on the details of and around the lips. I would like to try and create an image similar to this as I feel it is very pleasing to look at, I feel this is because you can see all the detail of the wrinkles around the mouth.
Although I do not particularly like this image I have chosen to include it to show the sorts of images I am hoping not to create, I do not find this image interesting or pleasant to look at, i think this is because even though it is a close up there is not much detail in the hands to focus on.

I am not sure who took these photos but i have decided to include them in my research as I would like to take some photos like these for my assignment :)
I think this image has a fun feel about it.
